What does your heart say when it’s wide open?

We all know the shoulds. We know the rules and the bad things happening in the news. We know the risks involved in every decision, the consequences, and the popular opinions. But when it comes to us, who we really are, what we really want, and whether that’s alright, we can feel paralyzed.

We say we’re lost or confused. Often, we’re just afraid.

I hear this in the collective conversation in my psychologist work, my creative work, and in the personal spaces of my life. The conversation goes something like...

Is this it? I don’t feel the way I thought I would. Like, not good. It feels like there’s something missing, but I don’t want to be ungrateful. I have so much, but I feel so empty.

I feel stressed. I feel numb. I feel hungry. Tired. I see myself lashing out, but I can’t stop it.

Why do I care so much about what people think? I want to be strong, capable, independent, but I need love, too. I care so much about the people I love, but is it enough? Is it too much?

It feels selfish to think of me, but...What do I want? What will make me happy? What will make me successful? Which is the right thing to prioritize? And if I want this so much, why am I stalling?


I believe we’re all in on the same conversation.


This is how it looked for me: 

The year was 2007. The place, San Francisco. That’s my poster on girls' depression, loneliness, and friend-related cognitions at the American Psychological Association in San Francisco.

Look closely at the smile. Do you see how it says, "Look at me doing this! I'm figuring it out! I'm fitting in! I'm being successful!"

Look deeper. Deeper. Do you see how it says, "Is this it? Why don't I feel the way I thought I would?"

look happy, right? But I wasn’t.

I thought I'd feel happy. Accomplished and confident, too. But instead, I felt restless and confused.

My work was thoughtful, my evaluations were glowing, and at the time, this is what I thought I wanted. I was passionate about children's internalizing disorders. (Convincing, right?).


The truth is, it never felt right, but I didn't know what would.


I tried my best to fix it the only way I knew how:

  • Make sensible choices like taking the job with the good health insurance and student loan forgiveness to feel secure. (I still worried.)
  • Work harder to feel accomplished. (I somehow felt more inadequate.)
  • Listen to everyone's advice and consider everyone's opinion to feel more confident about my decisions. (This is not a sustainable remedy for self-doubt.)

With every day crossed off the calendar, every goal accomplished, every milestone passed, that little voice still asked, So...why don't I feel the way I thought I would?

 I used to think something was wrong with me. 

Everyone else I knew was having breakthroughs and lining up their lives.  And there I was, trying to hide my dark cloud in the corner. What was I missing? Why wasn’t this working?

I know now that I'm not the only one. It took all of 30 seconds to find these online:

When I started writing online about things like mindfulness, self-compassion, and fulfillment, I'd get comments on my articles like these:

And today, I send emails to over 2,000 readers every week. After each one, I get back replies like:

I put so much emphasis on getting it right that there was no room for getting it clear.

Today, I guide myself to a different conversation when I'm afraid. Do you love it? What does your body say? How did it feel?

In the end, it always comes back to this. Body, openness, love. I can’t stop myself from talking about love...love for yourself, for the process of living, for your fears, for resistance, for the collective.

Whatever it is you’re after, loving from a clear and open heart is usually step one.

Love is where clarity lives. It’s what allows for healing boundaries and graceful letting go. Love creates confidence, joy, and magic.


Today, I know it's all about doing it for the love of it, not the lovability you hope to achieve.

Clarity is self-paced, not live. The class lessons and class materials are all online. When you enroll, you’ll get instant access to the Illumination Kit and all your class materials. I’ll also guide you through the weekly lessons by email. You can follow along for the four weekly sessions or take them at your own pace.  


Does my enrollment ever expire?
All of the materials are downloadable so you have lifetime access and can complete them at your own pace. What if I fall behind during the 4 weeks?

Do therapy or coaching sessions come with this program? 
Right now, no. But I will be checking in by email as we move through the course.
